The Intranet Makeover That Brought a Healthcare Team Together
Client: South Calgary Primary Care Network
Project: SharePoint Online Intranet
South Calgary Primary Care Network (SCPCN) supports 70+ member clinics that deliver patient-centred care across South Calgary. With over 100 internal staff and a multidisciplinary team of more than 300 healthcare professionals spread across clinical support teams, operations, and administration, effective internal communication is key to staying aligned and supported.
When Bryce Liesemer joined SCPCN in June 2023 as Manager of IT Operations and Business Continuity, one of the first mandates that landed on his desk had already been on the executive team’s radar for some time: the intranet.
“Staff shared in a survey that they didn’t always feel up to date on changes happening in the organization, so improving our internal communication channels became a clear priority,” said Bryce.
The organization’s existing intranet was nearly a decade old—outdated, hard to navigate, and barely used. Important updates were often lost in overflowing inboxes, and teams lacked a central place to stay connected. For an organization built on collaboration, it was clear that their internal tools needed to evolve.
Working closely with SCPCN’s communications lead, Bryce set out to replace the outdated platform with something modern, intuitive, and aligned with how teams collaborate today. As an existing Microsoft 365 customer, SharePoint Online was a natural fit. What SCPCN needed was a partner who could bring that vision to life, and that’s where Convverge came in.
Redefining Intranet as a Culture & Communications Hub
With the vision in place, SCPCN went through an RFP process before selecting Convverge as their implementation partner.
A close collaboration between SCPCN’s IT and communications teams helped shape the priorities: the platform needed to be intuitive for staff to use, straightforward for the communications team to update, and flexible enough for IT to fine-tune as needed. Keeping the solution largely out of the box was essential to ensure long-term maintainability and reduce future complexity. And finally, they wanted to launch it fast.
“We knew we needed something we could own and manage ourselves long-term on both the content and technical sides,” says Bryce.
“We wanted an intranet that looked good and felt branded, but didn’t require heavy custom development. That balance can be hard to strike, but Convverge really nailed it.”
Under a tight timeline, Convverge worked closely with SCPCN’s communications lead to explore colour schemes, imagery, and page layouts that reflected the organization’s tone and culture. High-fidelity mockups helped translate ideas into visual prototypes, which could be reviewed and refined before development began.
“We spent time upfront getting the design right, which made the build process so much smoother,” says Bryce. Weekly check-ins kept the project on track and collaborative from start to finish.
“The Convverge team was organized, responsive, and always open to feedback. They did a great job walking us through the process.”
From Missed Company Updates to a Connected Team
Since launch, SCPCN’s new intranet has become exactly what it was intended to be: a reliable, central hub where staff can find what they need, stay informed, and feel connected to what’s happening across the organization.
From the outset, the communications team made a commitment to keeping content fresh, and they’ve followed through. New updates are posted 2-3 times per week, functional departments manage their own pages, and key reference materials like the org chart are easily accessible.
“We’re sharing critical news and information from Alberta Health Services and the province, but then we’re also sharing the tools and internal resources people need easy access to,” says Bryce. “Looking at the site analytics, we can see that people are on it regularly. It’s getting used, which we love to see.”
SCPCN set the new intranet as the default homepage on staff browsers, and they’ve seen consistently strong viewership across articles and subpages, even beyond the initial launch window. Teams are engaging with updates, navigating department pages, and relying on the platform as a daily resource.
“Our ability to keep our entire employee community up to date and in the know—that’s been the biggest win.”
Built with intention and designed to be sustainable, the platform gives SCPCN full control over their own evolution. And with the right partner by their side, they launched it on time, on budget, and on target.
“Convverge gave us a strong foundation to build on. They were professional, responsive, and easy to work with the whole way through.”
