Meet Matthew Smith: Software Developer at Convverge

A recent university graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Mount Royal University, Matthew has already made an impact at Convverge. His journey here began with a 12-month software development internship, where he honed his skills and discovered his love for full-stack app development.
What drew me to this role was a few different factors,” he explains. “Namely, the opportunity to do full-stack app development, work on a small, tight-knit team, and the professional development opportunities.
For Matthew, our culture of innovation and collaboration is a perfect fit. “Convverge is using cutting-edge technology and is well-positioned to make effective use of this new technology to solve interesting problems. At my core, I love solving problems, so this aligns well with me.”
When it comes to working with clients, Matthew loves digging into their unique business challenges and getting creative to workshop solutions. “They’ll explain a scenario or an objective, and I get to come up with different ideas on how we can achieve it,” he says. “It’s something that takes a lifetime to refine, but working here, I get the opportunity to do that pretty much every day.”
Outside of work, Matthew channels his creative energy through skateboarding and playing guitar. These hands-on hobbies often inspire his approach to IT. “Applying creativity to IT solutions can give us some really interesting results, especially in this age of AI,” he says.
And while Matthew’s roots are firmly planted in Calgary, he’ll be the first to admit: “I’m born and raised here but do not do well with the cold.” Needless to say, the rest of us can relate!
Resonating deeply with Convverge’s culture of continuous growth, Matthew has set a goal to architect a solution this year—an ambitious aim that speaks to his drive and determination. He’s also guided by a favourite quote that shapes his approach to work and life: “Don’t pray for an easy life, pray to be a stronger person.” For Matthew, this quote embodies resilience and the mindset to overcome obstacles.
